Just Got Engaged? What's next?
So you just got engaged?
First of all—CONGRATULATIONS! 🎉
I still remember my own engagement. I thought I had everything figured out… until I realized how much I didn’t know. Trust me—this is a journey, and I’m here to guide you through it.
Hi, I’m Shumaila, your go-to wedding planner. I’ve planned over 1,000 events, and my goal is to help you thrive during one of the most exciting seasons of your life.
There are endless wedding checklists out there—but this one?
It’s specifically for my Desi brides. Navigating cultural traditions, family expectations, and multiple events can feel overwhelming, but I’ve got your back.
First Things First: Pause & Enjoy
Before you dive headfirst into planning, take a moment to actually enjoy being engaged. Celebrate with close family and friends. Let the excitement sink in.
Because trust me—within weeks, you’re going to be bombarded with questions like:
When’s the wedding? How many events are you having?
What colors are you wearing?
What’s the venue and how many guests?
Who are your bridesmaids?
What’s the bridal shower theme?
Where’s the honeymoon?
What designer are you wearing?
It’s a lot. And it comes fast.
Wedding Planning Can Feel Daunting—Especially for Desi Brides
Desi weddings come with a lot of opinions and family involvement. Sometimes it’s helpful. Sometimes… it’s overwhelming. So how do you start in a way that feels organized and manageable?
Let’s break it down.
Start with the Guest List
This is the very first thing I tell every bride to do.
You cannot set a realistic budget or find the right venue without a guest count. Saying “maybe 300–500 guests” isn’t going to work.
Have both families sit down and finalize their lists. That number will directly impact:
Your venue options
Your budget
Your overall wedding experience
Get this done early—it makes everything else easier.
Set Your Vision
Big and traditional?
Intimate and modern?
Somewhere in between?
Before asking your mom, grandma, or aunties—ask yourself.
Instagram, TikTok, and Pinterest will be your best friends here. Save outfits, décor, florals—dream it all up.
Pro tip: Keep all your links and inspiration in one Google Doc so you’re not searching every time you need to explain your vision.
Discuss Dates Early
Desi weddings often revolve around:
Auspicious dates
Family traveling from abroad
Have a few weekend options ready in case your dream venue isn’t available. Flexibility is key.
Hire a Planner (or Coordinator) Early
If your budget allows, hire a planner from the start—they’ll guide you through every decision.
If full planning isn’t in the budget, book a month-of or day-of coordinator immediately. They’re incredibly helpful with vendor and venue recommendations before you start searching on your own.
Budget Basics
Sit down with your fiancé and your families and talk numbers.
Desi weddings can get expensive fast—because let’s be honest, more always sounds better. But setting clear financial boundaries early will save you stress later.
A clear vision + a clear budget = smoother planning.
What Comes Next? The Correct Order
Once you have:
A date range
A guest list
A budget
A planner or coordinator
Here’s what to do next:
1. Book Your Venue
This locks in your date. Always book the venue before vendors.
If you book vendors first and then can’t secure your venue, you’ll be stuck adjusting dates—and that’s a headache you don’t want.
Popular venues book at least a year in advance, so start reaching out ASAP.
Then Book Your Key Vendors
Once the venue is secured, focus on:
Wedding Planner / Coordinator (yes, I’m biased—but it’s worth it)
Photographer & Videographer who understand Desi traditions
Pro tip: Do an engagement shoot to make sure you vibe with them.Hair & Makeup – good artists book up fast, especially those skilled in dupatta setting, sari pinning, and jewelry placement.
Pro tip: Always do a trial.Catering
DJ & Lighting
Design & Décor (florals, draping, rentals)
Cake
Stationery
Other minor vendors
And Finally—Take Care of YOU
Promise me you’ll do this.
Wedding planning is demanding, and decision fatigue is real. I’ve seen too many brides burnt out by their wedding day—and we don’t want that.
Start early:
Create a skincare routine
Stay active—walks, yoga, dancing
Take breaks when needed
Your mental health matters just as much as your seating chart.
Final Thoughts
This is a once-in-a-lifetime journey. Enjoy it. With the right planning, guidance, and support, your wedding will be everything you’ve dreamed of—and more.
